Pray for Soft Things and Rainbows: A Child's Poetic Prayer

What’s your prayer
a bedtime invitation
to each child
a liturgical practice
in the midst of our circus
a corporate collect
at the end of long days
sacred
not still
do not be fooled
the rhythm mixed with disruption
sibling strife
get off me
don’t touch me
stop
move
insert territorial growl of warning
only then to make it
to the final intercession
what’s your prayer
as our youngest and wildest
speaks her hope and truth

pray for soft things and rainbows

and we did
and today
and everyday I’ll search
for God’s answer to her prayer
my prayer
for comfort and color in the sky.
